Physiotherapy for dancers:
Improve performance. Injury prevention. Injury rehabilitation.

Picture
At Marion Physiotherapy expert Physiotherapist’s Tessa Walker and Jonathan Schubert are passionate about working with dancers and other performing artists to reach their full potential.

Physiotherapist Tessa Walker is also highly experienced in the worlds of dance and calisthenics, meaning she is able to understand the unique requirements you have of your body and tailor your treatment accordingly.

Specialist services for dancers include:

Pre-pointe Assessments:
These assessments are used to check a dancer’s readiness to progress to pointe work. During the assessment Tessa will check your strength, range of motion and basic ballet technique to determine her recommendations. Often it will be suggested that you undertake some home exercises to assist with the transition to pointe shoes. Dancers may attend anywhere from 1-5 appointments to check their progress and ensure a smooth transition to dancing en pointe.
After the initial assessment a report will be sent to the dancer’s primary teacher, outlining any recommendations. This may include a timeline of transitioning to pointe work and/or any strengths or weaknesses of the student to be aware of. This communication allows the dancer, parents, physio and dance teacher to work together as a team toward the dancer’s goal.
Injury rehabilitation:
At Marion Physiotherapy our focus is to provide a thorough assessment to ensure we understand your injury and any possible contributing factors. Our aim, along with the initial treatment of your injury, is to provide education and strengthening exercises to reduce the likelihood of the injury reoccurring.

Technique assessment/coaching:
Because of Tessa’s unique understanding of dance technique, she is also able to trouble shoot any problematic steps. If you have consistent trouble with things such as hip pain during developpes, pain at the back of the ankle en pointe or any other issues she may be able to assist you. Being proactive by assessing these sorts of issues may lead to better strength and control for the dancers and ultimately less injuries.

Education sessions for teachers/coaches/students:
Physiotherapist Tessa Walker is passionate about promoting safe dance practices through the dance community. She is excited to offer education sessions to fit the needs of staff and/or students. Topics covered may include best practice for warming up, cooling down and stretching or more advanced specific anatomy education for older students or teachers.
